In September 2010, Brian Phillips presented a talk titled “The Intellectual Roots of Progressivism.” Politically, the Progressive Era marked a dramatic change in the nation’s view of the proper role of government. During this period the Federal Reserve System was established, the federal government instituted an income tax, and a series of legislative acts gave the federal government sweeping powers to regulate numerous industries. On the local level, zoning gave municipalities virtually complete control over land use and educational “reform” changed the purpose, methodology, and the content in the nation’s schools. This talk will examine the ideas that gave rise to the Progressive Movement and demonstrate that those ideas continue to dominate our culture today.
